Apollo.io
B2B contact database, prospecting, and outreach in one platform
The default sales intelligence platform for founders running their own outbound. Free tier is genuinely usable for testing, paid tiers undercut ZoomInfo by an order of magnitude.
Apollo.io is what happens when sales intelligence meets cold outreach platform meets CRM-lite. Instead of paying $15K+/year for ZoomInfo, you get a similar-sized database with built-in email sequencing for under $1,000 a year. For founder-led sales teams, the math is hard to argue with.
Who it’s for
Founders doing their own outbound prospecting. Pre-product-market-fit SaaS teams trying to book demos. B2B service businesses building lead lists. Sales leaders running outbound at small companies who can’t justify ZoomInfo budget.
If you’re running enterprise sales with 50+ AEs, you’ll outgrow Apollo’s data quality and want ZoomInfo or LinkedIn Sales Navigator. If you’re not actually doing outbound, the free tier is plenty.
What it actually does well
The free tier is genuinely useful. 50 data credits per month, basic prospecting, the Chrome extension, and 2 sequences are enough to test whether outbound works for your business before paying anything.
The database is large and reasonably current. 210M+ contacts, regular updates, with filters granular enough to build targeted prospect lists by job title, company size, tech stack, and geography. Most other affordable platforms have noticeably weaker data.
Built-in sequencing is the real value-add. Most sales intelligence platforms make you export to a separate outreach tool. Apollo lets you build, send, and track multi-step email sequences from inside the same product. For solo founders, this consolidation matters.
The Chrome extension is the most-used part of the product for many users. Browse LinkedIn, click a profile, see Apollo’s data overlay with email and phone. Useful for verified reach-outs without leaving the platform.
Where it gets awkward
Data accuracy is the persistent complaint. Email bounce rates of 15-25% are routinely reported across G2 and Trustpilot. For comparison, premium databases like ZoomInfo claim 95%+ deliverability. Plan for a separate verification step (NeverBounce, ZeroBounce) before serious outreach.
Credits expire monthly and don’t roll over. If you have a slow prospecting month, you lose unused credits. This pushes teams toward higher tiers than they actually need.
Phone numbers cost 8x more credits than emails. Mobile credits are scarce on lower tiers — Basic gives 75/month. SDRs making 20+ calls per day will burn this in the first two weeks.
The dialer (live calling) is locked behind Professional at $79/mo annual. For inbound or dial-heavy workflows, this is a forced tier upgrade.
Pricing is per-user, which gets expensive at scale. A 5-person SDR team on Professional is roughly $4,740/year before any add-ons.
How it compares
Versus ZoomInfo: ZoomInfo has better data quality and enterprise features but starts at 10x the price. Apollo is the obvious choice for SMB and mid-market.
Versus LinkedIn Sales Navigator: Sales Nav is essential for engagement but doesn’t include email outreach or proper CRM integration. Most teams use both.
Versus Lemlist or Instantly: Those are pure outbound tools without the contact database. Apollo combines both, though its outbound features are slightly less sophisticated than dedicated platforms.
